More explicit works were sometimes labeled "hentai anime" or "H-anime," with "H" coming from the Japanese word "ecchi," which means lewd or indecent.

As these materials spread through early internet forums, newsgroups, and fan communities in the West, English-speaking fans adopted the Japanese word "hentai" as a category label. Over time, the term completely lost its original meaning and became synonymous with Japanese-style erotic animation and comics worldwide.
